September 20, 2017 - 12:00 pm-2:00 pm EST
Catherine Merrill Williams is President and Publisher of Washingtonian Media, a media conglomerate that includes the flagship 50-year-old magazine, Washingtonian, the national capital region’s leading monthly with more than 300,000 readers and winner of five National Magazine Awards; Washingtonian.com — the region’s premier lifestyle website with popular blogs, restaurant recommendations, and more; Washingtonian Bride & Groom; Washingtonian Welcome Guide; Washingtonian Custom Media; and Washingtonian Events.
She became the President following the death of her father, Philip Merrill, the Chairman and publisher of the Washingtonian magazine in 2007. After working 12 years for large Fortune 500 companies, she would take over the family business and run the iconic brand of Washingtonian magazine. It was a daunting challenge which also occurred during a time of seismic industry change in the media world. Yet Catherine made it her own and followed her gut instincts to run the enterprise with fresh eyes pointed towards the future.
She made changes that included changing the corporate name from Washingtonian Magazine to Washingtonian Media. Over the past nine years, Catherine has expanded the business from a single magazine to a media enterprise which includes multiple magazines, robust internet presence and web traffic, iPad edition, events division and a custom media unit.
Meet this savvy women media executive who grew a media enterprise out of guts, and determination.
